About Grant Montessori
Grant Montessori Preschool, is a public-private partnership between Columbia Public Schools and The Rollins Reading Company, a Missouri 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Who: The preschool currently serves up to twenty children, eight of whom are provided with scholarships based on certain eligibility criteria. Families who live in the Grant School attendance area are included first. If there are additional openings, children from other attendance areas may be included.
Why: Research shows that Montessori trained children make strong academic gains in literacy and in number concepts in preschool and in elementary school. Children with Montessori training also show advanced skills in conflict resolution and self-directed learning. A Montessori preschool experience will assist our children in succeeding academically and socially in elementary school.
What: The Montessori method provides opportunities for intellectual and holistic growth in young children through discovery learning in a prepared environment. Children learn at their own pace by using all of their senses in self-correcting materials that support the learning through the discovery method. The Montessori teacher prepares the environment using specific materials and opportunities that are the "next step" in the learning for each child. The materials are tailored for each child and are appropriate for the current stage of the child's development. In the outdoor environment, the children experience living things in nature, and use appropriate materials and structures to refine gross motor skills. The children have unstructured peer play as part of their holistic development.
When: 8:20 to 3:20, Monday through Friday, following the CPS calendar, with additional after school services for participating families until 5:15 for an additional fee.
Lead Teacher/Director: Susanne Rioux is a certified Montessori instructor since 2008 and an educator since 1991.
Teacher: Seren Pederson is a certified Montessori instructor, a certified early childhood teacher, and an educator since 2013.
Healthy Eating: We serve healthy, nutritious, homemade food daily to our children. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are prepared and delivered to our children through our partnership with a local caterer and food market. We track our food program so that we can provide nutritious food at a reasonable cost per meal, per child.
Play Time: Our preschool playground is a partnership between Columbia Public Schools, Columbia Parks and Recreation and The Rollins Reading Company.
