About Grant Montessori
The Grant Montessori Preschool is a public-private partnership between the Columbia Public Schools and The Rollins Reading Company, a Missouri 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Who: The preschool currently serves up to twenty children, eight of whom are provided with scholarships based on certain eligibility criteria. Families who live in the Grant School attendance area are included first. If there are additional openings, children from other attendance areas may be included.
Why: Research shows that Montessori-trained children make strong academic gains in literacy and in number concepts. Children with Montessori training also show advanced skills in conflict resolution and self-directed learning. A Montessori preschool experience will help our children succeed academically and socially in elementary school.
What: The Montessori method provides opportunities for intellectual and holistic growth in young children through discovery learning in a prepared environment. Children learn at their own pace by using all of their senses working with self-correcting materials that support learning through the discovery method. The Montessori teacher prepares the environment using specific materials that are tailored for each child and are appropriate for the current stage of the child's development. In the outdoor environment, the children experience living things in nature and use appropriate materials and structures to refine gross motor skills. The children have unstructured peer play as part of their holistic development.
When: 8:20am to 3:20pm, Monday through Friday, following the CPS calendar, with additional after-school services for participating families until 5:15pm.
Lead Teacher/Director: Susanne Rioux has been a certified Montessori instructor since 2008 and an educator since 1991.
Teacher: Rebecca Choat completed her Montessori Teacher certification in 2007, and received a bachelors degree from the University of Missouri. The focus areas of her Interdisciplinary Studies degree are English, Communications, and Sociology. She has 17 years of experience in the Montessori Classroom.
Healthy Eating: We serve healthy, nutritious, hand-prepared food daily to our children. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided. At Grant Montessori Preschool, we believe that sound and balanced daily nutrition is key to learning.
Play Time: Our preschool playground is a partnership between Columbia Public Schools, Columbia Parks and Recreation and The Rollins Reading Company.
